BRIEFLY : LUYENDYK WINS POLE IN INAUGURAL LAS VEGAS RACE.


One era will end and another will begin today in the Indy Racing League's first Las Vegas 500K.

The race will mark the inaugural event at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Las Vegas Motor Speedway, located in Clark County, Nevada, just outside Las Vegas, is a 1,200 acre (4.9 km²) complex of four different tracks for automobile racing. The complex is owned by Speedway Motorsports, Inc., which is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina.  and the finale for the cars and engines used by the fledgling IRL 1. (jargon, chat) IRL - In real life. Generally synonymous with f2f.

Arie Luyendyk put himself in the record books Saturday with a pole-winning lap of 226.491 mph, a mark that will likely stand as a track record for years with the IRL set to introduce its new combination of 4-liter, non-turbocharged engines and totally new chassis next January.

Dave Villwock posted the fastest qualifying speed for today's 30th Bill Muncey Cup Unlimited Hydroplane hydroplane, small, high-powered racing boat designed to skim along the surface of the water. Its hull is so shaped that at high speeds the bow is tilted up out of the water, reducing the effect of frictional drag.
