 union temporarily closed the Port of Hueneme for two hours Tuesday as part of a West Coast protest of policies being discussed at the World Trade Organization conference in Seattle.

 revenue generated by Proposition 10, the state tobacco tax - has received its first allotment, totaling $7.8 million.

The agency expects to receive an additional $4 million during the first year of the program. The money will be used to provide health care to children under 5 in Ventura County.

``These funds will go a long way to contribute to enhanced health, safety and quality of life for our county's children, and early childhood development is one of the best ways we can work together to assure a bright future for all of us here in Ventura County,'' said county Supervisor Kathy Long, who also chairs the commission.

Expansion begins at seniors center

Area schools chief to join state panel

VENTURA - County Schools Superintendent Charles Weis has been named to chair a subcommittee of a statewide committee working on school reform.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin Delaine Eastin is a California politician. She served as the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1995 to 2003. A native Californian, Eastin received her bachelor's degree from the University of California, Davis, and her master's degree in political science  named Weis to head the subcommittee of the Public School Accountability Act There are a number of piece of legislation known as the Accountability Act:
  • Canada's Federal Accountability Act
  • The American Syria Accountability Act,
  • Darfur Peace and Accountability Act
  • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
 Advisory Committee, which was formed out of the governor's school reform initiatives.

Police gearing up for New Year's Eve

VENTURA - If the world is going to end on New Year's Eve, law enforcement throughout Ventura County will be on the streets trying to prevent it.

There will be hundreds of extra officers from Thousand Oaks to Ventura leading up to midnight, making sure parties aren't too loud, drivers aren't drunk and hype doesn't become reality.

``It's going to be the biggest New Year's Eve celebration of our lifetime,'' said Chief Deputy Bruce McDowell.
