 on 138

State Sen. W.J. ``Pete'' Knight questioned newly appointed Caltrans Director Jose Medina about improvements on Highway 138 and the Antelope Valley Freeway's car-pool lanes during a confirmation hearing.

``I would like some serious consideration for improving these highways such as 138, which is now commonly known as `blood alley,' `death trap' . . . you name it,'' Knight said during the hearing, which resulted in a 5-0 vote to send the nomination to the Senate floor.

Knight, R-Palmdale, characterized the Antelope Valley Freeway's car-pool lanes as ``useless.''

Medina, a former San Francisco supervisor, fended off car-pool lane complaints by noting that the federal government requires them on new highways, agreeing that more uniformity was needed on car-pool occupancy and lane hours.
