Joe Bessey led second-round qualifying Saturday for the $885,275 Las Vegas 300 NASCAR NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), organization that sanctions American stock-car races, est. 1948. It held its first race in Daytona Beach, Fla.  Busch Series race today at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Las Vegas Motor Speedway, located in Clark County, Nevada, just outside Las Vegas, is a 1,200 acre (4.9 km²) complex of four different tracks for automobile racing. The complex is owned by Speedway Motorsports, Inc., which is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. . Bessey, driving a Chevrolet, toured the 1.5-mile superspeedway at 156.191 mph to earn the 26th starting spot today. Bessey's speed was 14th-fastest overall.

Jeff Green won the pole position for the race in qualifying Friday with a lap of 159.311.

Joe Ruttman, who hadn't won a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series pole position since 1995, raced his Ford to the No. 1 starting position for the Florida Dodge Dealers 400. The top-30 qualifiers for today's race broke the track record at the Metro-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex in Homestead, Fla.

FOOTBALL: Green Bay Packers defensive star Reggie White told high school students in Knoxville, Tenn., that police provoke young African-American men to put them behind bars. White also said he believes in a conspiracy to prevent a cure for AIDS and to promote practices that lead to abortions and fetal-tissue research, the Knoxville News-Sentinel reported in Saturday's editions.

BOWLING: Parker Bohn III Parker Morse Bohn III (born July 13, 1963 in Jackson Township, New Jersey) is a left-handed American professional bowler and has been a member of the Professional Bowlers Association since 1984. He currently ranks fifth all-time with 30 career PBA titles, and has earned over $2.  won his second consecutive title, beating Walter Ray Williams Walter Ray Williams, Jr. (born October 6, 1959 in Eureka, California) is one of the top-ranking professional Ten-pin bowlers in history. OLYMPICS: Australia's security chiefs and the FBI reportedly plan to use a computer link to share intelligence about potential terrorist threats to the 2000 Olympics.

The Sun-Herald of Sydney said officials from both countries met in Canberra, Australia's capital, last week. It said the meeting decided to establish a worldwide computer link to provide instant profiles on known terrorist groups and individuals.
