 Assistant Chief Bayan Lewis Bayan Lewis (February 25, 1942-) was Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department in 1997. He was chosen by majority vote (3-2) by the LAPD commission, March 31, 1997. Prior to this, he served on the force for 34 years. , who is a contender to become interim chief in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , also was named Friday as one of three finalists to become Reno's next police chief.

Jerry Hoover, police chief in St. Joseph, Mo., was ranked the highest candidate by two of three screening panels that interviewed five candidates Thursday.

Hoover was the top choice of community leader and law enforcement panels.

Lewis, assistant chief in Los Angeles, was the favored candidate of a committee of city employees.

Defendant charged with posting signs

A Mission Hills man allegedly posted diet and work-at- home program signs on utility poles and freeway on-ramps or exits, a prosecutor said Friday.

David Paul Denegher, 37, was charged Thursday with nine misdemeanor counts of posting the signs on city property. He also faces a charge of posting advertising signs on public property, a count included in a March 21 complaint.

A Caltrans supervisor alerted authorities Jan. 17, after seeing the ``Diet Magic'' and ``Work from Home'' signs on various freeway ramps around the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley
