LANCASTER - A man who was shot when he took the garbage out and discovered someone trying to set fire to his son's car died Sunday, sheriff's deputies said.

James Beaudoin Jr., 49, was shot in the head by the would-be arsonist outside his home in the 2600 block of East Avenue J-10 about 9:15 p.m. Saturday, said sheriff's Deputy Bob Killeen.

Witnesses said the assailant fled in a white vehicle with at least three people inside, and had not been apprehended by Sunday evening, Killeen said.

The attacker ``basically opened fire and (the victim) was struck once in the head,'' said Killeen, adding that investigators found evidence that the shooter was in the process of setting the car on fire.
