In a victory of the new guard over the old, 17-year-old Anna Kournikova overcame an angry Steffi Graf in three sets Thursday to reach the semifinals of Eastbourne's Wimbledon warmup tournament.

Kournikova, a Wimbledon semifinalist last year, needed just over two hours to beat the seven-time Wimbledon champion 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-4.

The sixth-seeded Russian fell during the seventh game of the final set and, after the match, was taken to a hospital for X-rays on her right hand. No damage was found.

The second-seeded Graf, playing in just her fourth tournament since undergoing knee surgery a year ago, was infuriated by several line calls.

After being broken to go down 5-4 in the final set, Graf spent the entire changeover complaining to tournament director Brenda Perry. She refused to shake hands with the chair umpire at the end of the match.

Cedric Pioline was fined $3,500 for the outburst that got him kicked out of the Nottingham Open. The fine was announced by the ATP Tour a day after the French player was defaulted for ``verbal abuse'' of the chair umpire.

Pioline, trailing 6-3, 1-1 to Australia's Scott Draper, was upset that the umpire did not call a let on his serve.

In tournament play, Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Grant Stafford.Play was disrupted on a rainy day at Nottingham, with the first match not finishing until late in the afternoon.

NBA: Sacramento Kings guard Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf is leaving the NBA to play in Turkey.

Abdul-Rauf, a Muslim who gained notoriety two years ago for refusing to stand for the U.S. national anthem, signed a two-year, $3.4 million contract with the Turkish club Fenerabache, said his Los Angeles-based agent, Shareef Nasir.

NHL: Tampa Bay acquired goalie Bill Ranford, who spent most of this past season as a backup for Olaf Kolzig in Washington, for a third-round pick in Saturday's draft and a second-round pick in '99.

An 11-year veteran, Ranford owns a career record of 230-255-69 with a 3.17 goals-against average and 14 shutouts over 595 games with the Capitals, Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs after helping the Oilers win the Stanley Cup in 1990.

Boston Bruins goaltender Byron Dafoe underwent surgery to repair stretched ligaments in his left shoulder, an injury that could cause him to miss the start of training camp.

Two days after repeating as Stanley Cup champions, the Detroit Red Wings made sure that defenseman Jamie Macoun would be part of the team in its quest for a third championship.
