, pulling away from countryman Joseph Chebet Joseph Chebet (born August 23, 1970) was the winner of the 1999 Boston Marathon and the 1999 New York Marathon. He won in Boston in 1999 after losing to fellow Kenyan Moses Tanui the year before by only three seconds.  on the last city block for the victory.

Tanui covered the 26-mile, 385-yard course in two hours, seven minutes and 33 seconds, the third-fastest time in race history.

It was Tanui's second Boston Marathon win in the past three years and the eighth straight for a Kenyan man.

Chebet finished four seconds behind Tanui.
