Marion Jones Marion Jones, also known as Marion Jones-Thompson (born October 12, 1975 in Los Angeles, California), is an American former athlete in track and field. She was the winner of five medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, which she later relinquished after , the newest American sprint star, was selected the women's Athlete of the Year Athlete of the Year

Jones won the 100 and long jump at the U.S. nationals, then went on to take gold in the 100 and 400-meter relay at the World Championships. She had the fastest times of the year in the 100 (10.76) and 200 (21.76).

Wilson Kipketer, who broke the oldest world record on the books, was named the men's Athlete of the Year.

The Kenyan-born Kipketer, who runs for Denmark, broke Sebastian Coe's 16-year-old record of 1:41.73 in the 800 meters when he ran 1:41.24 in Zurich on Aug. 13. A week later in Cologne, Kipketer lowered the mark to 1:41.11.

Kipketer was undefeated for the year in the 800 and won the gold medal in the event at the World Championships in Athens.

He also broke the world indoor 800 record twice - in the heats and in the final at the World Indoor Championships in Paris in March.
