BRIEFLY : JONES NAMED TRACK'S TOP WOMAN.

Marion Jones, the newest American sprint star, was selected the women's Athlete of the Year Friday by the International Track and Field Association.

Jones, a graduate of Thousand Oaks High who played basketball at North Carolina, starred in the 100 meters, 200 meters and long jump.

Jones won the 100 and long jump at the U.S. nationals, then went on to take gold in the 100 and 400-meter relay at the World Championships. She had the fastest times of the year in the 100 (10.76) and 200 (21.76).

Wilson Kipketer, who broke the oldest world record on the books, was named the men's Athlete of the Year.

The Kenyan-born Kipketer, who runs for Denmark, broke Sebastian Coe's 16-year-old record of 1:41.73 in the 800 meters when he ran 1:41.24 in Zurich on Aug. 13. A week later in Cologne, Kipketer lowered the mark to 1:41.11.

Kipketer was undefeated for the year in the 800 and won the gold medal in the event at the World Championships in Athens.

He also broke the world indoor 800 record twice - in the heats and in the final at the World Indoor Championships in Paris in March.

BASKETBALL: Isaiah Rider of the Portland Trail Blazers drew another suspension as he was banned for three games and fined $10,000 for spitting at a fan in Detroit.

The Philadelphia 76ers traded Marko Milic to the Phoenix Suns for veteran Tom Chambers.

The team also placed Derrick Coleman on the injured list because of an irregular heartbeat.

Charlotte Hornets owner George Shinn will not face sexual-misconduct charges, though something likely happened between Shinn and a woman at his suburban mansion, prosecutor Tommy Pope said.

BASEBALL: Boston Red Sox slugger Mo Vaughn expects to sign a five-year contract extension, the Boston Globe reported.

Free-agent catcher Brent Mayne and the San Francisco Giants agreed to a $1.45 million, two-year contract.

He hit .289 with six home runs and 29 runs scored last season for Oakland, all career highs.

In other deals, the Red Sox agreed to a minor-league contract with Korean pitcher Sun-Woo Kim and re-signed infielder Mike Benjamin to a one-year deal worth $242,500; left-handed reliever Ed Vosberg agreed to a $1.25 million, two-year contract with the San Diego Padres, a day after he was acquired in a trade with Florida; and the Chicago White Sox sold the contract of outfielder Lyle Mouton to the Yakult Swallows of the Japanese Central League.

GOLF: Colin Montgomerie's eagle at the 11th hole helped turn an ordinary round into a remarkable 6-under 66 to vault Scotland into the lead halfway through the $1.5 million World Cup of Golf at Kiawah Island, S.C.

Loren Roberts shot a 68 to take a three-shot lead after two rounds of the Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational.

Pat Hurst, aided by a near tap-in eagle, shot her best score ever, an 8-under 64 that gave her a one shot lead over Nancy Lopez midway through the 72-hole

season-ending LPGA Tour Championship in Las Vegas.

JURISPRUDENCE: An assortment of Mickey Mantle's personal belongings - including his birth certificate, his bathrobe and his neck brace - were pulled off the auction block to settle a lawsuit by the late Hall of Famer's family.

LOCAL: Melissa Danio has been named the new girls' soccer coach at Calabasas, replacing Michael Rivas, who coached one season. Danio has coached U.S. Olympic Development teams.
