Marion Jones Marion Jones, also known as Marion Jones-Thompson (born October 12, 1975 in Los Angeles, California), is an American former athlete in track and field. She was the winner of five medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, which she later relinquished after  had set a goal of breaking her best of 21.76 in the 200 meters at the World Cup in Johannesburg, South Africa South Africa, Afrikaans Suid-Afrika, officially Republic of South Africa, republic (2005 est. pop. 44,344,000), 471,442 sq mi (1,221,037 sq km), S Africa. , on Friday, and she more than fulfilled it in her first race at altitude. Her meet-record 21.62 seconds, the third-fastest in history, kept her undefeated in 36 finals this year in the long and short sprints, the long jump and the relays.

Only Florence Griffith Joyner, the world record-holder, with times of 21.34 and 21.56, has run faster than Jones in the 200.

The three-day, finals-only competition brings together athletes from the United States, Africa, Europe, the Americas, Oceania, Asia and two European nations competing for team honors.

Donovan Bailey, the 30-year-old world record-holder in the 100-meter dash and 1996 Olympic gold medalist, underwent surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles' tendon. He injured it playing basketball.

The estate of one of three fans killed at Michigan Speedway during the July 26 U.S. 500 IndyCar race has filed an $11 million wrongful-death lawsuit against the track.

The suit was filed on behalf of the family of Kenneth D. Fox of Lansing, Mich.

The lawsuit alleges Michigan Speedway officials knew or should have known the wall and fence were inadequate and that such an accident was possible with open-wheel race cars. Michigan Speedway officials declined comment.
