MOTOR SPORTS: Jeff Burton was injured in a crash during practice at Michigan Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich., that also took out primary cars for Jeff Gordon and Dick Trickle.

Burton was taken to a hospital in Jackson, Mich., for X-rays after the crash, which began when Gordon lost control of his Chevrolet in turns 3 and 4 at the 2-mile track and spun in front of Fords driven by Trickle and Burton. He was later released.

Burton qualified ninth for today's Miller 400, while Gordon was 12th and Trickle 17th. All three will use back-up cars, though, so they will drop to the rear of the pack before the green flag.

Burton's X-rays found no broken bones. By late afternoon, it appeared likely he would at least be able to start the No. 99 Ford today.

Dale Jarrett, who starts on the pole today, is the 11th driver to win the pole in the past 11 Michigan races.

Joe Amato, Randy Anderson, Jim Yates and Matt Hines were the leaders for today's finals of the Pontiac Excitement Nationals at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.
