Hale Irwin Hale S. Irwin (born June 3, 1945) is an American golfer. He is the uncle of Heath Irwin.

Irwin was born in Joplin, Missouri. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1967, where he was a two-time All-Big Eight defensive back, as well as an academic All-American in
, aiming for a money title along with the Senior Tour Championship, used on-target irons and steady play for the first-round lead Thursday with a 5-under-par 67.

``I don't want to sit here and say it was boring,'' said Irwin, who has won $1,572,894 this season. ``But it was a very solid round. Not a lot of spectacular holes-in-one, knocking it in for eagles or that kind of stuff. It was just the kind of round I wanted to play.''

FOOTBALL

Suspected but cleared in the Boston College gambling scandal, cornerback Kiernan Speight said he will skip Saturday's game against Notre Dame because ``my heart isn't in it.''

Speight, who turns 19 on Sunday, said he will return with his family to Washington, D.C., to rest and think about whether he'll rejoin the team for the season's last two games.

Boston College suspended 13 players this week for gambling, including two who bet against their own team. Although he was one of five players accused by teammates of gambling, Speight was not suspended, and his attorney said he has been exonerated by Middlesex County District Attorney Thomas Reilly.

``I've done everything BC has asked me to do. When the situation took place, I felt like there was no one on my side,'' Speight said. ``Somebody should tell me how my name was put in. Somebody should apologize.''

Missouri defensive back Shad Criss was suspended for the remainder of the season, two days after being arrested for harassing and assaulting a 20-year-old woman who had a protection order against him.

A rape charge filed against Purdue tight end Jon Blackman in July has been dismissed by a county prosecutor, and his suspension from the team was lifted.

Elena Likhovtseva reversed an Olympic defeat and upset Mary Joe Fernandez 6-3, 6-1 in a second-round match at the Bank of the West Classic The Bank of the West Classic is a tennis tournament on the WTA Tour held in Stanford, California, United States.
