BRIEFLY : INSPECTORS PROBE CAUSE OF HOUSE FIRE.

Two of homeowner David Hayano's cats died in the fire, and Hayano said he burned his hand while trying to save them.

``I just wanted to save what I could,'' said Hayano, who was being treated at the scene by paramedics. ``I wanted to save my cats, but I couldn't catch them.''

His house, in the 21400 block of Summit Drive, appeared to have been severely damaged by the fire, which Hayano reported to 911 operators about 6:30 p.m., authorities said.

Hayano, a retired professor at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. Fire officials explain meaning of mapping

Padilla pushes city for Internet options

With the Internet increasingly becoming a part of daily life, a city councilman Wednesday called for greater use of it to allow residents to pay everything from parking tickets to utility bills.

In order to enter the Senate he had to resign as Councilman for the 7th District on the Los Angeles City , who chairs the City Council's Information Technology and General Services Committee, urged the city to look at expanding the role of the Internet in making the city an ``e-government.''

Under his proposal, residents would be able to pay bills, tickets and permit fees over the Internet, as well as access postings for government jobs and city contracts. Padilla also wants the city to post all notices of meetings by various city agencies.

Reports could bring charges at Rampart

Ventura schools ban campus pesticides

VENTURA - Seeking to create a safer learning environment, the Ventura Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts.  has unanimously approved a new policy banning the use of pesticides on school grounds.

An advisory committee of parents and district administrators is scheduled to meet Monday to explore alternatives to using pesticides to control insects and weeds.
