BRIEFLY : INJURED MAN FOUND IN FRONT OF SCHOOL.


NORTH HILLS - Shocking parents and their children, a 26-year-old man who had been shot several times was found slumped over his steering wheel and critically injured in front of Langdon Avenue Elementary School elementary school: see school.  on Monday, police said.

The victim, whose name was withheld by police, was hit in the head and his injuries were considered life-threatening, police said. Bank robberies hit three-decade low

The number of bank robberies in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  fell to a 30-year low last year, but the region remains the nation's bank robbery capital, the FBI reported Monday.

There were 656 bank robberies reported in 1998 in the seven counties covered by the Los Angeles office of the FBI. Compared to 1992, when a record 2,641 holdups occurred, bank robberies were down 75 percent last year, said Timothy McNally, who heads the Los Angles FBI office.

Superior Court Judge Florence-Marie Cooper ruled that the Assicurazioni Generali company had adequate business ties to California to justify a lawsuit here.

The decision was seen as a key step in Adolf Stern's case to seek benefits from policies bought in 1929 by his brother, Mor Stern, who was killed in a Nazi death camp. Adolf Stern had tried to collect on the policies in Prague, Czechoslovakia, after the war but was rejected.

Three other Californians, Nicholas Babos, Julia Sladek and Alex Friedman, have filed separate suits against Generali over similar claims.

Wachs wants pets on city Web page

How much is that doggy on the Internet?

Councilman Joel Wachs on Monday proposed using the city's Web site for the Department of Animal Services to post pictures of pets in the city's six shelters.

Wachs said he wants the shelters to put up the pictures to give pet owners a way to find out whether their missing dog or cat has been found.

Proposed building clears early hurdle

VAN NUYS - No significant effect on the environment would be caused by a new municipal building at the Van Nuys Civic Center, according to a proposed environmental document issued by the city.

The building, officially called the Marvin Braude San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
 Constituent Service Center, also would require a conditional use permit, which will be the subject of a Planning Commission hearing Feb. 18.
