City OKs ban on `cop killer' ammo

The Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  voted Wednesday to ban the sale of armor-piercing ``cop killer'' ammunition, and urged the Board of Supervisors to do the same so the prohibition is countywide.

The proposed ban, which requires approval of an accompanying ordinance, was sponsored by Harbor area Councilman Rudy Svorinich Jr. It passed unanimously, without discussion.

Last week, Svorinich was the lone voice of dissent in a council debate over a ban on the sale of Saturday night specials Saturday Night Special

He argued that such a ban would have little effect on violence, as long as such cheap guns were sold in other Southland cities. But he excused himself from voting, and the measure passed 13-0.

Actor Downey pleads no contest

MALIBU - Actor Robert Downey Jr. pleaded no contest Wednesday to four drug and weapons counts, but will remain in a live-in treatment program at least until his Nov. 6 sentencing.

The actor entered his plea to one count of felony cocaine possession, and one count each of misdemeanor driving under influence, possession of a weapon and being under the influence of a controlled substance controlled substance n. a drug which has been declared by federal or state law to be illegal for sale or use, but may be dispensed under a physician's prescription. .

Under terms of the plea agreement, a felony heroin possession count will be dismissed when Downey is sentenced Nov. 6 by Malibu Municipal Court Judge Lawrence J. Mira, said Deputy District Attorney Ellen Aragon.

``He's looking at a maximum sentence of three years in state prison on the felony, and potentially two years total on the three misdemeanors,'' Aragon said.
