BRIEFLY : IMPACT OF JET-BAN PLAN SET FOR DEBATE.


VAN NUYS - The Van Nuys Airport Van Nuys Airport (IATA: VNY, ICAO: KVNY, FAA LID: VNY) is a public airport located in Van Nuys, California in the San Fernando Valley, within the Los Angeles city limits.  Citizens Advisory Council is set to meet today in a special meeting to debate the economic impact of a proposal to ban noisy Stage 2 jets from the airport. The proposal was laid out in a study by the Airport Corporation of America, which council members said they needed time to review when this debate was postponed two weeks ago at their regular meeting.

The study found that the city and companies could lose up to $191 million in revenue and as many as 565 jobs if noisy Stage 2 jets are eliminated from the airport. Residents welcome at forum on courts

Breakfast to help Encino Scout troop

Boy Scout Troop 431 of Encino will serve an old-fashioned pancake breakfast on Saturday to raise funds for the Scouts.

Newspaper delivery driver shot to death

LONG BEACH - A delivery driver for the Press-Telegram of Long Beach was shot to death early Monday while making rounds on his daily route, police said.

Huong Ngoc Tran was found about 7:30 a.m. in the back seat of his gray pickup truck in an alley in the central district of the city. He was shot at least once in the upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene, police spokeswoman Karen Owens said.

Tran, 45, of Long Beach was last seen alive picking up Monday's editions at the newspaper's building about three to four hours earlier, Owens said.

There was no motive for the shooting and no arrests were immediately made.

State's civil rights staff will double

The state attorney general will more than double his civil rights enforcement staff, under a five-point plan to crack down on violations and reach out to the public.

``Attorney General (Bill) Lockyer feels that over the last eight years there has been a lack of attention to this issue,'' said Louis Verdugo, who was appointed to oversee the civil rights section at the California Department of Justice.

``We feel that we have been disconnected from the community, that people stopped filing complaints for a variety of reasons.
