BRIEFLY : HOLIDAY TRAFFIC TOLL HITS SEVEN IN COUNTY.


At least seven people were killed in car crashes in Los Angeles County this New Year's holiday, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.

The reporting period was from 6 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Sunday, said California Highway Patrol Officer Frank Sandoval.

 reported 21 traffic deaths in that 60-hour period, Sandoval said.

During that time, CHP officers arrested 239 motorists in Los Angeles County for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Statewide, there were 1,112 DUI arrests, Sandoval said.

The CHP declared a maximum enforcement period from 6 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. this morning, meaning more officers than usual will be on patrol in an effort to cut down on holiday crashes, many of them drinking-related.

Deputies searching for missing bicyclist

 - A search was under way Sunday night for a bicyclist who failed to return from a ride at Piru Creek, according to Ventura County Sheriff's Department The Ventura County Sheriff's Department (VCSD) provides law enforcement for the unincorporated areas of Ventura County, California, USA, as well as several cities within the county. Search and rescue teams were looking for the man, both on the ground and in helicopters, said Sheriff's Capt. Rod Thompson.

``He was dropped off there at the Piru Creek trail head and they were supposed to pick him up at 4 p.m.,'' Thompson said. Rescue teams were concerned because the man was not wearing much clothing and it was expected to get colder in mountain areas overnight. Thompson could not provide the biker's age or name.
