    Van Nuys center included in plan

    Mayor Richard Riordan proposed Friday to include the Van Nuys Civic Center region in the city's existing Targeted Neighborhood Initiative Program, which will provide the area with $1 million for improvements to businesses.

    Riordan sent the proposal to the City Council for action as part of his $160 million plan for using federal community development block grants.

    ``Collectively, our mission is to make the neighborhoods of Los Angeles better places to live, work, learn and play - and who better to partner with than the neighbors themselves,'' Riordan said.

    Officer, youth hurt in crash with truck

    SYLMAR - A police officer and a 15-year-old being transported to Sylmar Juvenile Hall both received minor injuries after crashing into a pickup Friday afternoon, authorities said.

    The officer driving the car was not injured, but an officer in the passenger seat received minor injuries after the patrol car made a left turn in front of a small pickup, which hit the unit on the passenger side, said Sgt. Ron Ryan, of the Los Angeles Police Department's Valley Traffic Division.

    The pickup driver was not injured in the 3:15 p.m. crash, Ryan said.

    The crash was under investigation Friday night, Ryan said.
