BRIEFLY : HOGARTH TIED FOR SAN GABRIEL LEAD.


Five golfers, including 1996 U.S. Amateur Public Links The U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, often referred to as the Public Links or the Publinx, is a men's amateur golf tournament, one of 10 individual amateur championships organized by the United States Golf Association.  champion Tim Hogarth of Chatsworth, are tied for the lead at the midway point of the 14th annual Southern California Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship at San Gabriel Country Club.

Hogarth was joined by Brian Crocker of Rancho Mirage, who was runner-up in the tournament two years ago; Redlands' Ted Lyford; Alhambra's Brian Ricketts and John Nouskajian of South Pasadena, all of whom fired rounds of 1-under-par 70.

FOOTBALL: Utah State sophomore running back Demario Brown will be sentenced Thursday for assaulting a student who was arguing with another football player. Brown was convicted Aug. 20 of misdemeanor assault. He faces up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.

Jim Kekeris, a former standout football player at Missouri, died at 73 after a heart attack. Kekeris played tackle and fullback and also was used as a place-kicker. He is one of eight Missouri football players who were three-time all-conference selections. He was an All- Big Six performer from 1944-46 and was a second-team All-America in 1946.
