BRIEFLY : HERNANDEZ RECALL EFFORT DISINTEGRATES.


The recall drive against Councilman Mike Hernandez was disbanded Friday, beset by internal turmoil and a lack of money.

However, recall organizer Rudy Tenorio de Cordova Cordova, Spain: see Córdoba.  said Friday the group is reorganizing and will launch a new recall drive to try to force an election on Hernandez, who has pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine. Tenorio de Cordova said his committee will file new recall papers soon, which would start the process all over again.

City settles lawsuit over parking funds

The Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  on Friday brought to an end a class-action lawsuit challenging its use of the special parking revenue fund to balance its budget.

Council members, without comment, unanimously approved the $750,000 payment to attorney Richard Fine to cover his costs in developing and filing the legal action against the city.

The council earlier had approved terms of a settlement in which it would agree not to use the fund as a means to balance the budget as well as returning some $60 million that had been used over the years.

The fund, developed from money collected in parking meters, is to be used to build city parking lots around the city.

Man hurt in crash remains in hospital

PACOIMA - A 45-year-old man remained hospitalized Friday after a drunk-driving suspect collided with his vehicle, critically injuring him, and then sideswiped a second vehicle, authorities said.

Mario Beltran, 43, of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol at 6:10 p.m. Thursday along westbound Van Nuys Boulevard, near DeGarmo Avenue, said Officer Mitch Nowlen of the Los Angeles Police Department's Traffic Division.

Beltran veered his Ford pickup into oncoming traffic, collided with the Pacoima man and then sideswiped a second eastbound vehicle, Nowlen said.

The second vehicle then hit a parked car, the officer said.

Beltran was treated for minor injuries at the scene and then taken to Van Nuys Jail, Nowlen said. The Pacoima man was in critical condition and on a respirator respirator /res·pi·ra·tor/ (res´pi-ra?ter) ventilator (2).
