BRIEFLY : HENLEY'S EX-GIRLFRIEND HELD IN DRUG CASE.

Darryl Henley's former girlfriend surrendered to authorities Friday to face charges that she helped the former Los Angeles Rams cornerback arrange a drug deal from his jail cell. Kym Taylor, 36, turned herself in to U.S. marshals. Henley, 29, is awaiting sentencing for a cocaine trafficking conviction last year.

A family court's decision ordering former New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor to pay $2,010 a month in child support for his illegitimate son has been upheld by a state appeals court in Trenton, N.J. The child-support payments stem from a paternity suit filed in 1991 by Wendy Robinson of Jersey City claiming Taylor fathered a son by her in 1990.

TENNIS

Sophomore Justin Gimelstob of UCLA turned professional this week at the age of 19. He hired International Management Group and signed a multimillion dollar deal with Nike Nation. Ranked No. 1 in college singles and doubles, Gimelstob last week led UCLA to the finals of the collegiate nationals, where the Bruins lost to Stanford. He was upset in the first round of the NCAA tournament for individuals.

BASKETBALL

It appears the most eagerly anticipated college basketball game in New England will take place next season. The New Haven Register has reported that UConn and the University of Massachusetts will play at the Hartford Civic Center.

Although negotiations are ongoing and several details of the contracts remain to be worked out, the third annual Wooden Classic, set for Dec. 7 at Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, will feature four of the nation's most-respected programs - Utah, Arizona, Louisville and Arkansas.

OLYMPICS

The International Weightlifting Federation has granted the United States two additional athletes in the upcoming Olympics, with the possibility of at least one more being added before the Games begin. The extra berths were granted because the United States is the host country, and although no American has won a medal in the past two Olympics, the U.S. has done well in previous Games.

The Netherlands, Japan, Ukraine and Croatia won matches in Osaka, Japan, and remained tied for the lead in the women's volleyball tournament that will determine the last three teams for the Atlanta Olympics. All four nations have 4-1 records in the round-robin tournament, which continues through Sunday. Italy and Bulgaria are 2-3, followed by winless Romania and Taiwan.

HOCKEY

Detroit Red Wings center Kris Draper underwent successful surgery on his fractured jaw, the team said. Draper suffered the injury in the first period of Wednesday night's deciding loss to the Colorado Avalanche in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals. He also suffered a broken nose and a concussion on the hit and has 40 stitches in his right cheek.

Draper went into the boards face first after being hit from behind by Colorado's Claude Lemieux. The NHL is reviewing the hit.

ETC.Dennis Horan rebounded after a subpar fifth round and captured the top seed in dramatic fashion in the Greater Hartford Open. The San Diego native defeated C.K. Moore 213-192 in the final game of the night and passed the Chehalis, Wash., resident by eight pins for the No. 1 position.
