BRIEFLY : HEARING TO ADDRESS PLANNED COLLEGE TAX.


VAN NUYS - Los Angeles Community College District The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is the community college district serving Los Angeles, California and some of its neighboring cities. In addition to typical college aged students, the LACCD also serves adults of all ages.  trustees tonight will hear what the public thinks of a $12-per-home assessment aimed at paying for improvements at Valley, Mission, Pierce and six other campuses.

College officials say the assessment is necessary to offset the decline in funding to community colleges. The three Valley colleges have developed wish lists that include new gymnasiums, bigger swimming pools, more threes and better lighting.

The trustees are scheduled to hold a public hearing on the levy at 7 p.m. at Valley College, 5800 Fulton Ave., in Van Nuys. The hearing will be held in Monarch Hall.

Woman dies after being struck by car

GLENDALE - An elderly woman who stumbled on a parking garage driveway was run over and fatally injured in·jure

Man shot in parking confrontation dies

A man shot three weeks ago in a dispute over a parking space died Tuesday, elevating an assault case against the suspect to murder, authorities said.

Stacy Foster, 30, was shot repeatedly May 6 after what authorities believe was a dispute with London Lee Washington over a parking space in a Sepulveda Boulevard apartment complex.

Deputy District Attorney Ron Smalstig said that Foster drove up and found the space for his apartment taken by someone else and yelled at Washington about parking there.

Washington moved his car, and Foster parked his car in the space. When Foster returned to the car hours later, Washington allegedly opened fire, Smalstig said.

City offers reward in attack on girl

Teens found guilty in stabbing death

MALIBU - Four teen-agers face life in prison without parole after a Malibu Superior Court jury Tuesday found each guilty of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of an Agoura Hills youth a year ago.

Returning after the Memorial Day weekend for a sixth day of deliberations, the panel convicted each defendant in the stabbing death of James P. Farris III.

The jury found Farris was stabbed May 22, 1995, during an attempt by the defendants to steal marijuana from his friend Michael McLoren's backyard fort - an offense carrying a minimum sentence of life without the possibility of parole, attorneys said.

The Police Commission voted Tuesday to order a review of putting a civilian scientist in charge of the LAPD's Crime Lab, which was attacked by O.J. Simpson's attorneys as a ``cesspool cesspool: see septic tank.  of contamination.''
