Convicted hacker Kevin Mitnick Kevin David Mitnick (born October 6, 1963) is a controversial computer cracker and convicted criminal in the United States.

Mitnick was convicted in the late 1990s of illegally gaining access to computer networks and stealing intellectual property.
 was ordered Friday to stay away from cellular phones, the Internet and anything remotely resembling a computer once he is released from prison.

``I believe that Mr. Mitnick represents a danger to the community,'' said U.S. District Judge Mariana Pfaelzer Mariana Pfaelzer is a U.S. District Court Judge in the Ninth Circuit. She is probably best remembered for her role in striking down California's Proposition 187, which would have denied services to illegal aliens. , ``and this is an attempt to prevent that.''

Last week, Pfaelzer sentenced the habitual hacker to 22 months in prison for using ``cloned'' cell phone numbers and violating his parole. But she held off imposing terms for his parole because attorneys were dissatisfied with her suggestions.

On Friday, Pfaelzer issued new and extensive terms for Mitnick's parole.

She said she wanted to encompass as much of the expanding computer industry as possible, to keep Mitnick from going on another ``hacking spree'' once he gets out.

DA creates team to battle stalkers

A special team of two prosecutors will coordinate with police and businesses to prevent stalking, terrorist threats and workplace violence, the District Attorney's Office announced Friday.

The Stalking and Threat Assessment Team, which will open shop Tuesday, will try to resolve cases before victims are attacked. In the past, people who were threatened were told authorities could not take action until an assault.

Second baby death linked to student

A second Southland college student was charged Friday with strangling and then dumping her newborn into the trash after giving birth.

Cal State Fullerton student Jennifer Michelle Garcia, 19, of Bassett, is accused of killing the daughter she delivered just after midnight April 10 while home alone.

She is charged with murder, assault on a child causing death and child abuse, and is being held on $1 million bail, according to according to

Trainer found guilty of abusing horses

MALIBU - Equestrian trainer Tom Valter was found guilty Friday of four felony counts of animal cruelty for abusing a horse at an Agoura Hills stable.

Valter, of Santa Monica, faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced Aug. 8.
