``It is obscene, irresponsible and inexcusable that $200 million is being spent to build a high school on an abandoned oil field plagued with methane gas leaks and water contamination,'' he said in a prepared statement.

In particular, the supervisor wants the grand jury to look into conflict of interest allegations against one of the lawyers who worked on the project and determine why the school district purchased the property despite warnings about possible contamination problems, said Antonovich spokesman Cam Currier. The Board of Supervisors will consider Antonovich's motion calling for an investigation at its Tuesday meeting.

``I want an official, outside body coming in and investigating,'' said Board of Education President Victoria Castro.

Construction of the massive downtown high school has been slowed by the discovery of potentially explosive methane in greater quantities than expected. The district also has been hit with allegations that several people working on the project knew five years ago that environmental questions about the site had not been properly addressed before its purchase.
