Contrary to early reports, Cohen's body had not been dismembered but had been stuffed in the 2-by-3 foot box in a fetal position, said Scott Carrier, a Los Angeles County Coroner's Office spokesman.

The discovery of the box containing Cohen's body in the Santa Susana Pass Santa Susana Pass is a mountain pass connecting Simi Valley to the San Fernando Valley.

Teachers request hearings on raises

Union representatives asked the Los Angeles Board of Education on Monday to consider reopening teachers' 1997-98 contract and approve a pay increase.

The board agreed to hold two public hearings on the contract issue, Friday and Sept. 2.

If the board does not agree to renegotiate the contract, teachers' salaries will fall 2 percent. Last year, the board approved a one-time pay increase of 2 percent, said Sam Kresner, assistant to the president of United Teachers-Los Angeles.

That one-time raise was granted by the district, which found itself with adequate funds, to restore salaries to 1990-91 levels. Teachers suffered substantial pay cuts in the early '90s.

``We don't want to lose money, also we'd like to see if they could find additional dollars for an additional increase,'' Kresner said.

Board members made no comment on the request.
