BRIEFLY : GLENDALE BUSINESS RAVAGED BY BLAZE.


GLENDALE - A pre-dawn fire gutted a Glendale medical-supply company and damaged two adjacent businesses on Sunday, but there were no reports of injuries, firefighters said.

The blaze in the single-story building at 1224 S. Glendale Ave. was reported shortly after 2:40 a.m., said spokesman Don Wise. Firefighters arrived to find the building fully involved in flames In Flames is a melodic death metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden founded in 1990. The fire spread to a florist's shop and beauty-supply business before it was extinguished about 3 a.m.

Damage was estimated at $600,000. It was not clear how the fire started.

Quakes shake area near Mexico border

PASADENA - Two earthquakes shook a sparsely populated area of Imperial County near the Mexican border on Sunday.

Hough described that shaker as a ``foreshock'' to a 4.2-magnitude quake that struck at 8:53 a.m. and was centered 16 miles southwest of Ocotillo.

 leaves woman dead

PALMDALE - A Northridge woman was killed Sunday when the car she was driving veered into oncoming traffic on a Palmdale street and collided head-on with a pickup truck, a sheriff's deputy said.

The collision happened about 3 p.m. on Palmdale Boulevard near 50th Street East, said sheriff's Deputy David Miklos.

The 50-year-old woman was driving a Datsun 240Z east on Palmdale Boulevard when she apparently veered off the roadway and overcorrected, sending the car into the westbound lanes, Miklos said.

The woman died at the scene, while the pickup driver suffered minor injuries, he said.The woman's name was withheld pending notification of relatives.

Recycling yard site of bees swarming

LOS ANGELES - A swarm of thousands of bees was discovered at a recycling yard in the Hyde Park area on Sunday, a foreman at the facility said.
