 got two clean-air grants totaling $8.4 million to help buy compressed natural gas-powered buses that will be in service by spring, the agency's chief officer said Friday.

The Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee - a regional clean air funding group - provided $6.4 million to help the MTA buy 277 buses.

That grant is the largest single clean-air award of its type in Southland history, said Metropolitan Transportation Authority head Julian Burke.

Downtown building inaugurated, again

State officials on Friday rededicated the renovated Broadway department store building in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The rehabilitation of the 10-story, 85-year-old structure at 320 W. Fourth St. and Broadway cost $69 million.

The building, which has been vacant since 1973, will house about 1,100 employees from a dozen state agencies.

Several features of the building were preserved, including a stairwell from the original 1914 structure, flagpoles and a marble art deco department store floor medallion.

Man pleads guilty in racial assault
