Group says agency had role in death

Environmentalists accused state regulators Wednesday of contributing to the death of a Toluca Lake woman by keeping under wraps a 1996 study that found gas from a fumigated building can drift through pipes to a neighboring home.

A coalition of anti-pesticide groups claimed that had the Department of Pesticide Regulation's findings been made public, precautions could have been taken that might have prevented the death in March of Sandra Mero, 36.

Mero collapsed during the fumigation fumigation: see disinfectant.  of a building connected to her rented home by several old pipes. But department officials rejected the groups' charges, noting that regulations already require fumigators to seal all openings before using pesticides.
