The Philadelphia Flyers fired head coach Terry Murray on Friday, citing a rift between him and players that General Manager Bobby Clarke said was irreparable.

Murray's dismissal comes less than a week after the team was swept in four games by the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Finals. Murray was criticized during the series for rotating goaltenders Garth Snow and Ron Hextall and for saying the team was ``in a choking situation'' after losing Game 3.

Clarke said the loss in the finals wasn't the main reason for the firing and that he didn't consult the players before making the decision.

``If you get beat four straight, the other team is better,'' he said. ``The problems we have didn't just surface, they've been here for the past couple years. We solved some and we haven't been able to solve others.''

NBA: Toronto Raptors forward Marcus Camby was arrested on a marijuana charge near his home after police spotted his car drifting across a road.

Police said they suspected a drunk driver when they pulled Camby over about 2 a.m. near South Windsor High School, about 10 miles from where he played his high school ball in Hartford. Camby told police he had not been drinking, but the officer smelled burned marijuana in the car, said Sgt. Matthew D. Reed.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL: The second-seeded team of Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson were upset by unknowns Lee Legrande and Matt Unger, 13-11, during the third round of opening-day action at the Hermosa Beach Grand Slam.

The top-seeded team of Jose Loiola and Kent Steffes, who have won seven of the 10 AVP tournaments this year, earned a close 16-14 win in overtime against Daniel Cardenas and Eduardo Bacil.

BOXING: Dariusz Michalczewski, a Polish-born German, pounded out a unanimous decision over Virgil Hill to become the first man in history to hold three light heavyweight titles.

Michalczewski, 34-0 with 28 knockouts, the undefeated WBO champion, used his power to take control of the fight in the fifth round as he stripped the American of his WBA and IBF belts in a punishing fight.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Florida State hired Sue Semrau to replace Chris Gobrecht, who last month broke a five-year, $95,000-a-year contract after just one season to take the coaching post at USC, her alma-mater.
