BRIEFLY : FIREFIGHTERS CONFINE BLAZE TO SINGLE HOME.


WOODLAND HILLS - Flames engulfed a home Wednesday in the hills south of Ventura Boulevard Ventura Boulevard is one of the primary east-west thouroughfares in the San Fernando Valley; as it was originally a part of the El Camino Real (the trail between Spanish missions), Ventura Boulevard is the oldest route in the San Fernando Valley. It was also U.S. , a city Fire Department spokesman said.

About 60 firefighters prevented flames from spreading to other homes and nearby brush in the 5100 block of Calatrana Drive, said Bob Collis, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), also known as the Los Angeles City Fire Department to distinguish it from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Home business fee nixed by City Council

The council, without comment, voted 13-0 to delete the fee, which had come under attack from artists, writers and others as an intrusion on their First Amendment right of free expression.

Suit against Coleman bullying, lawyer says

A bus driver suing former ``Diff'rent Strokes'' actor Gary Coleman Gary Wayne Coleman (born February 8, 1968) is an American actor.

Coleman is best known for his role as Arnold Jackson in the American sitcom Diff'rent Strokes
 for allegedly punching her is trying to exploit his stardom ``to gain fame and fortune,'' Coleman's lawyer said.

``We have no intention of allowing Gary to be bullied by his accuser and becoming a winning lottery ticket and publicity pawn for her,'' lawyer Adam London said Wednesday, two days after Tracy Fields filed a $1 million lawsuit claiming Coleman punched her.

Fields, a Metropolitan Transportation Authority driver, said the attack has caused headaches and muscle spasms.

 overtime pay system

The City Council voted Wednesday to spend $470,000 to upgrade the system for paying overtime to LAPD officers in hopes of addressing charges in a lawsuit by officers seeking more than $50 million for late payment of overtime.

The money will pay, in part, for a computer system that will improve a system for calculating and paying overtime to police officers - a system that now relies heavily on sorting by hand.

Police commander makes deputy chief

Police Chief Bernard C. Parks Bernard Parks (born December 7, 1943 in Beaumont, Texas) is a member of the Los Angeles City Council, representing the 8th District in South Los Angeles and former Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Parks attended Los Angeles City College, received his B.S.
 on Wednesday announced the promotion of Cmdr. Rick Dinse to deputy chief in charge of the West Bureau.

Dinse, a 32-year veteran of the department, most recently had been in charge of the department's Uniformed Services The Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Public Health Services. Soap star, producer hubby sue ex-nanny

Deidre Hall Deidre Hall (born Deidre Ann Hall on October 31, 1947) is an American actress best known for her role as Dr Marlena Evans on the NBC daytime soap Days of our Lives.  and her TV-producer husband sued their former nanny Wednesday for more than $100,000 over a book containing material about the life of the ``Day of Our Lives'' star.

Hall, who plays Marlena Evans Dr. Marlena Evans Black (formerly Craig, Brady) is a fictional character on the television drama Days of our Lives. Deidre Hall has played Marlena from 1976 to 1987, and again since 1991.  on the daytime soap opera, alleges Leslie Suzanne O'Neil breached a confidentiality agreement by publishing the book ``My Nanny'' in November 1997.

Multivehicle crash stalls freeway traffic

Traffic was tied up for hours Wednesday on the Ventura Freeway in Studio City after a crash involving six vehicles near Tujunga Avenue.

Three people were injured, none critically, officials said.

At one point, all westbound lanes were closed by the California Highway Patrol, but they were all open again by 7:22 p.m.
