BRIEFLY : FIREFIGHTER UNITS JOIN TO BATTLE SIMI BLAZE.


SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - Firefighters from three agencies battled a brush fire Monday that spread uphill over more than 160 acres from the 118 Freeway near Kuehner Drive.

The Ventura and Los Angeles county fire departments and the California Department of Forestry used helicopters, air tankers and ground crews to fight the fire that started at about 2:20 p.m.

``It's rough going, hot rough work for the firefighters. It is taking its toll on the fire crews,'' said Joe Luna, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department Not to be confused with Ventura Fire Department.

The Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) provides fire protection and emergency response services for the unincorporated areas of Ventura County, California, and for six other cities within the county.

``It's very rugged terrain, sparse vegetation and lots of boulders,'' he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Police investigate Sen. Hayden staffer

State Sen. Tom Hayden Thomas Emmett "Tom" Hayden (born December 11, 1939) is an American social and political activist and politician, most famous for his involvement in the anti-war and civil rights movements of the 1960s.  placed a member of his staff on administrative leave Monday amid a police investigation whether the driver of a car assigned to the senator flashed a female bicyclist.

``We want the work of the office to go on without distractions, and the staffer should be able to focus on this issue,'' said Hayden's chief of staff, Rocky Rushing. ``He was the person driving the state car when the alleged incident occurred. He is the focus of the police investigation. We felt it was the proper step.''

No bail reduction for accused teen

PASADENA - A Pasadena Superior Court Judge on Monday denied a request to lower the $1 million bail of a Glendale teen-ager accused of fatally shooting a Hoover High School Hoover High School may refer to any of the following:

Mark Geragos, the defense attorney for 18-year-old Artiom Badalyan, asked for an unspecified reduction in bail. Judge Joseph De Vanon denied the request and set Badalyan's trial date for Aug. 9.

Badalyan is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Avetis ``Avo'' Demirchyan, a 15-year-old Glendale boy who was gunned down just off the Hoover High campus on Sept. 10, 1998. The shooting occurred during an after-school fight. Authorities have said Badalyan and Demirchyan were friends and the shooting was unintentional.

Meyer's attacker convicted of battery

A 39-year-old woman was convicted Monday of misdemeanor battery and elder abuse Elder Abuse Definition

Meyer, 77, was attacked May 26 while asleep on a couch in the Hollywood Hills home he shared with Debra Angela Masson. Prosecutors said Meyer and Masson had a 14-year relationship.

Masson will be sentenced Aug. 2 for domestic battery, elder abuse and battery in a dating relationship.

The maximum penalty for each crime ranges from six months to one year in jail and maximum fines range from $1,000 to $6,000, said city attorney's spokesman Mike Qualls.
