BRIEFLY : FIDELITY WEIGHS CLOSING MAGELLAN.


An executive at Fidelity Investments Fidelity Investments is a group of privately held companies in the financial services industry. It is made up by two independent but closely cooperating companies, Fidelity Management and Research Corporation (FMR Co.  said the mutual fund company would continue to examine the possibility of closing the Magellan fund, the $55 billion fund that is the country's largest, to new investors.

``We have no current plans to close the fund, and it's something we always look at,'' said Gary Burkhead, president of Fidelity Management and Research. He spoke at a conference sponsored by Morningstar Inc., the fund-tracking company. Some analysts have criticized Fidelity, a unit of FMR FMR Former (government official title)

 said Thursday that it would terminate the licenses of Ohio Blue Cross and Blue Shield Blue Shield A US not-for-profit health care insurer that is a reimbursement intermediary for physicians. Cf Blue Cross.  if the Ohio plan proceeded with a $299.5 million agreement to sell its main lines of business to Columbia-HCA Healthcare Corp., the nation's biggest investor-owned hospital chain.

Analysts called it a warning to Blue Cross plans across the country not to try to auction themselves off to hospital chains or other well-heeled bidders outside the Blue Cross system.

NEW YORK - America Online Inc., which has been sued over rounding up its per-minute rates, confirmed Thursday that it has been talking to several states' attorneys general about its business practices.

Newsday reported Wednesday that the biggest on-line service was the subject of a formal investigation by New York Attorney General Dennis Vacco over how it calculates its bills. A representative of Vacco's office said Thursday, as a matter of policy, it did not confirm or deny such investigations.
