BRIEFLY : FERNANDO AWARDS SELECTS NEW LEADER.


The Fernando Awards Inc. selected Irwin G. Rosenberg of Northridge as its new president during the group's annual organization meeting Friday.

Rosenberg, director of community and public relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment. By its nature, public relations is devoted to serving particular interests by presenting them to the public in the most  for Laidlaw Transit Services, succeeds Attorney Jeffrey L. Glassman as head of the philanthropic organization known for its yearly presentation of the Fernando Award.

Glassman, of the law firm Riordan and McKinzie, stepped down after the first year of his two-year term and became the group's vice president.

As president, Rosenberg will oversee the group's operations and funds, the selection of the 1998 Fernando Award recipient, and the distribution of scholarships to local high schools.

A San Fernando Valley native and 25-year veteran of the California Highway Patrol assumed command Monday of the agency's West Valley office.

Call directs police to small chop shop

Police responding to a disturbance call of loud noise in Tujunga on Sunday night instead turned up a small chop shop in the 6800 block of Valmont Street, officials said.

Fiery crash kills driver in Glendale

GLENDALE - A motorist died in a fiery car crash Monday after ramming a wall and being hit by another car, which caused the first motorist's car to burst into flames, according to Glendale police.

Glendale firefighters found the driver, who had not yet been identified, inside the vehicle and engulfed in flames, said watch Sgt. Paul Hayashida of the Glendale Police department.

The crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m. when the motorist, driving westbound on Mountain Avenue near the Glendale Freeway, crossed into the eastbound lanes and crashed into a wall, Hayashida said.

A second car, driving eastbound on Mountain Avenue, hit the motorist's car as it crossed its path, causing the car to burst into flames.

Investigators have not yet determined if rainy weather may have contributed to the crash, Hayashida said.

Wounded motorist dead after car crash

STUDIO CITY - A motorist was killed Monday night after he was shot and crashed his car into a light pole in Studio City, Los Angeles police officials said.

The man, who had not been identified as of late Monday, plowed into the light pole at the intersection of Lankershim and Ventura boulevards at about 8:30 p.m., said LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel.

The motorist was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center Providence Holy Cross Medical Center is a hospital in Mission Hills, California, USA. The hospital has 254 beds, and is part of Providence Health & Services. History  in Mission Hills, where doctors discovered the gunshot wound, Davies said.
