The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) is a local law enforcement agency that serves Los Angeles County, California.
, eight months after labeling the treatment of mentally ill inmates at county jails ``unconstitutional.''

Citing recent progress, including the opening of a mental health ward at Twin Towers and a more intensive screening process for mental illness. Justice officials say they will not sue at this time.

However, they cautioned county lawyers that ``much remains to be done,'' and Justice officials will revisit the jails again in three to six months.

Fatal crash driver receives 18-to-life

MALIBU - A repeat drunk driver who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in an alcohol-related crash that killed two Pepperdine law students was sentenced Thursday to 18 years to life in prison.

Marathon organizer joins football effort

Bill Burke, the organizer of the Los Angeles Marathon The Los Angeles Marathon is an annual marathon held in Los Angeles, California since 1986. Valley police plan open house events

Police stations in Van Nuys and Calabasas will be hosting open houses Saturday.

The Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys Division will hold an open house and community awareness fair between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday.

It's an opportunity to meet officers and tour the station. Also on hand will be members of the department's bomb squad and a mobile crime lab.

There will be children's activities, entertainment and a barbecue.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department will have an open house at its Malibu//Lost Hills station on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

There will be displays and demonstrations of the department's arson/bomb squad, SWAT team, mounted posse, mountain rescue team and a helicopter.
