Haile Gebrselassie Haile Gebrselassie (Ge'ez: ኃይሌ ገብረ ሥላሴ, haylē gebre silassē; born April 18, 1973) is an Ethiopian long distance track and road running athlete.  of Ethiopia broke his world indoor record in the 3,000 meters by more than four seconds Sunday.

Gebrselassie, running alone for half the race, was timed in 7 minutes, 26.14 seconds in Karlsrukhe, Germany. He had set the previous record of 7:30.72 at Stuttgart, Germany, on Feb. 4, 1996.

He won a silver medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics as well as a silver medal at the 1997 World Championships, both in 4 x 100 metres relay.
