BRIEFLY : EMPLOYEES PICKET RALPHS WAREHOUSE.


GLENDALE - About 400 employees at a Ralphs warehouse on the Glendale-Los Angeles border walked off the job Wednesday morning in a show of support for workers trying to unionize a similar facility in Stockton.

The warehouse at 4842 San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the  was chosen to be the first to take part in the walkout because it does not handle perishable foods, a union official said. Under labor rules, the union must give Ralphs 72 hours notice before a walkout at a facility that handles perishables.

 Joint Council 42 said the walkout was not a strike but ``an informational picket line'' that union members do not cross. Santangelo said that unless the Stockton warehouse is allowed to unionize, similar walkouts will occur at Ralphs warehouses statewide, including sites in Carson, La Habra La Habra (lə hăb`rə), city (1990 pop. 51,266), Orange co., S Calif.; inc. 1925. A suburb of Los Angeles, La Habra was settled in the 1860s by Basque sheepherders.  and Riverside.

``It could last a day or two weeks,'' Santangelo said. ``We're supporting the Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. Ralphs officials at the warehouse declined comment, and a Ralphs spokesperson could not be reached.

Screenings offered for depression, free

BURBANK - St. Joseph's Medical Center will offer free, anonymous depression screenings to local residents from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. today as part of National Depression Screening Day.

Comments on city's grant plan sought

GLENDALE - The second of three community meetings offered by the city of Glendale's Department of Community Development and Housing will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday at John Muir Elementary School John Muir Elementary School is a co-educational public school that is located in West San Jose, California. Animation careers series continues

GLENDALE - Glendale Community College's Careers in Animation lecture series continues Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in the college auditorium with a segment on special effects.

Speaker Sara Gennis has worked in animation and special effects since the 1970s, designing effects for such movies as ``Star Trek,'' ``All Dogs Go to Heaven,'' and ``Space Jam.''
