Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky Zev Yaroslavsky (born December 21, 1948) is a Los Angeles County politician. He served on the Los Angeles City Council from 1975 until 1994, when he was elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. He was preceded in both offices by Edmund D. Edelman.  is urging interested residents to attend a special community meeting tonight on future improvements at El Cariso Park in Sylmar.

The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the park's community room, 13100 Hubbard St. Yaroslavsky isn't scheduled to attend but county parks officials will be there.

The county has $1.7 million available to upgrade El Cariso Park under the terms of a measure voters approved in 1992. County parks officials want to know the public's priorities as they refine proposals for the Board of Supervisors.

Mural project gets OK from city panel

The city Recreation and Parks Commission gave approval Tuesday to a series of murals to be drawn by area students at the Humphrey Memorial Park in Pacoima.

The commission approved four murals at different locations around the park to be coordinated by the Communities in Schools, New Directions for Youth and Pacoima Beautiful.

The murals will include a nature scene, a train and a young girl holding the hand of an adult.

Services center to be renovated

The city's Construction Services Center in Van Nuys will be renovated and doubled in size under a project approved Tuesday by the Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States. .

The council allocated $470,000 to develop the center into a one-stop permit location for businesses, property owners and developers.

The center, at 14425 Erwin St. in Van Nuys, is designed to provide one location for obtaining business and building permits.

Hit-and-run driver kills pedestrian

PANORAMA CITY - A motorist hit and killed a pedestrian in a crosswalk early Tuesday morning and then fled, police said.

The man, who police were still trying to identify Tuesday evening, was crossing westbound on Cantara Street at 6:50 a.m. when a male driver headed eastbound on Cantara made a left turn to go north on Coldwater Canyon Avenue, hitting the pedestrian in the crosswalk, said LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel.

Discovery requests filed in tobacco suit

``We are focusing on our contention that, for years, the tobacco companies concealed the health risks of secondhand smoke from the public,'' Hahn said.
