BRIEFLY : EDBERG SAD IN BASTAD - LOSING, HURTING.

Stefan Edberg's hopes of ever winning the Swedish Open ended in disappointment Saturday when he was beaten by fellow Swede swede: see turnip.  Magnus Gustafsson in the semifinals.

And then, he pulled a groin muscle and defaulted in the doubles at Bastad.

Gustafsson ruined the top-seeded Edberg's dream of capturing his native country's premier clay-court title by winning 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). It was Gustafsson's first win over Edberg as a pro in six meetings.

Gustafsson will face Andrei Medvedev in the final today.

Medvedev, of Ukraine, defeated No. 2 Carlos Costa of Spain 6-4, 6-4.

Less than two hours after losing his singles match, Edberg was injured while hitting a second serve as he and Anders Jarryd led Joshua Eagle of Australia and Peter Nyborg of Sweden 5-2 in the first set of the doubles semifinals.

Twice a finalist in Bastad, Edberg will retire after this season. He'll play his final tournament in the Stockholm Open in October.

Alberto Costa beat top-seeded defending champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals of the Swiss Open in Gstaad and will play fellow Spaniard Felix Mantilla for the title. Mantilla, a friend of Costa's since they were teammates in juniors, beat Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-3.
