BRIEFLY : DWP COMMISSIONER HEARING POSTPONED.

A hearing on the reappointment of Department of Water and Power Commission President Rick Caruso has been rescheduled from Monday to Friday.

A City Council committee will hold a hearing on Caruso's reappointment at 9 a.m. Friday, and the entire council will hear the issue at 10 p.m.

A group of North Valley residents have opposed Caruso's reappointment because he supports using part of Chatsworth Reservoir for recreation facilities or limited commercial or residential development.

Caruso said he will seek a compromise between conservation and development that is acceptable to the community.

Four inmates injured in county jail fight

LYNWOOD - A brawl Sunday between African-American and Latino inmates at the county's Century Regional Detention Facility left four inmates injured, a sheriff's deputy said.

The fight, which broke out about 6:30 a.m., involved about 20 inmates and lasted a couple of minutes, said Deputy Boris Nikolof.

Deputies stopped the brawl using verbal commands, he said.

Three inmates were treated at the jail's clinic for minor injuries, he said, and an additional inmate was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center with a cut on his forehead.

Woman's condition stable after gunshot

ARLETA - The condition of an Arleta woman who was shot by her husband, who then killed himself, has been upgraded from critical to stable, a Los Angeles police sergeant said Monday.

The shooting, which occurred just after noon Sunday in a home in the 13800 block of Wingo Street, is believed to be an attempted murder-suicide, police said.

Police went to the home after neighbors reported hearing gunshots. When they got there, they heard another shot.

By the time they got into the residence, the woman had been shot at least once, and the man apparently shot himself in the head, police said.

Both were taken to hospitals, where the man died from his wound.

Resident of Ojai, 82, mending leg wound

OJAI - An 82-year-old woman who was hit by a stray bullet while gardening in the back yard of her Ojai home remained in good condition Monday, Ventura County sheriff's officials said.

Gwen Hosie was in her yard in the 2000 block of Woodland Avenue on Sunday afternoon when she heard a loud popping sound behind her and suddenly felt a sharp pain in her lower leg.

Hosie told officials she realized she was bleeding heavily and immediately telephoned a friend. She was taken to Ojai Valley Hospital, where doctors treated her for a bullet wound and released her later that day.

The bullet probably came from someone negligently firing a gun, officials said.
