Drowning victim's identity discovered

LONG BEACH - Authorities on Saturday identified the woman who drowned in the rain-swollen Los Angeles River The Los Angeles River is an intermittent river flowing through Los Angeles County, California, from Canoga Park in the west end of the San Fernando Valley, 51 miles (82 km) southeast to its mouth in Long Beach.  while allegedly trying with her boyfriend to escape from police.

The body of Renee Cruz, 20, of Long Beach, was recovered Friday night by Long Beach firefighters.

Her boyfriend, Anthony McGonigle, 33, of Long Beach, also jumped into the water but was pulled out alive. He was initially arrested in connection with a car theft, but was later booked on suspicion of murder with regard to Cruz's death, said sheriff's Deputy Bob Killeen.

Hemet area shaken by little earthquake

HEMET - A small earthquake rumbled near Hemet early Saturday, according to the California Institute of Technology California Institute of Technology, at Pasadena, Calif.; originally for men, became coeducational in 1970; founded 1891 as Throop Polytechnic Institute; called Throop College of Technology, 1913–20.  in Pasadena.

Valley group need literacyy volunteers

The San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
 Literacy Council needs volunteers to teach English and reading skills to adults, including some on waiting lists because there aren't enough tutors.

Some of the students are immigrants learning English and seeking U.S. citizenship while others were born in the United States and are functionally illiterate.

Tutor training classes will be given Saturday, Feb. 21, Feb. 28, and March 14, 21, and 28 at Sepulveda United Methodist Church United Methodist Church, in the United States, religious body formed by the union in 1968 of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church (see Methodism). , 15435 Rayen St., North Hills. Classes run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
