Mail carriers collect goods in food drive

Letter carriers across the country toted heaps of food alongside their mail bags on Saturday as residents donated millions of pounds of nonperishables for the seventh annual food drive.

People left cans, boxes and other unopened foods at their mailbox for letter carriers to take back to U.S. post offices.

From there, the items are taken to local charities and food banks that need their stocks replenished for the summer months.

as summer approaches, so it was suggested in 1993 that the food drive be held the last Saturday before Mother's Day.

At the Woodland Hills post office, carrier Mark Mendenhall picked up nearly 200 pounds of food from the 834 apartments along his route. The 47-year-old Oak Park resident said he didn't mind the extra weight.

``My brother might be eating this food some day, or it could be me. Nobody should go without,'' Mendenhall said.

Residents on his route donated enough food to fill 20 grocery bags, he said.

Last year, more than 5 million pounds of food were collected statewide and about 62.5 million pounds were donated across the country.
