BRIEFLY : DALLAS MAKES HULL A STAR.

The St. Louis Blues couldn't keep him. The Chicago Blackhawks The Chicago Blackhawks are a professional men's ice hockey team based in Chicago, Illinois. They are members of the Central Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).  couldn't get him. So somehow, Brett Hull Brett Andrew Hull (born August 9, 1964 in Belleville, Ontario) is a former NHL player, the son of legendary player Bobby Hull and nephew of Dennis Hull. Though in the earliest years of his career few saw him as a potential star, the colorful and often outspoken Hull announced his  has landed in Dallas.

Seeking to bolster an offense the faltered in the Western Conference finals, the Stars signed the unrestricted free agent to a three-year, $17.5 million contract Friday.

The 33-year-old right wing became the most sought-after player in this year's free-agent market after failing to reach an agreement with the Blues, with whom he spent 13 seasons. His new contract with the Stars also includes a no-trade clause, a one-year option and, Hull hopes, a chance to win his first Stanley Cup Stanley Cup: see hockey, ice.

``The main thing is to win and to be a champion,'' Hull said. ``They (Dallas) were as close as anybody to winning a Stanley Cup and to have them want me to be a part of that I thought is a great honor.''

Hull, with 554 career goals and 987 points in 801 games, turned down a $15 million contract in March with the Blues because it didn't include a no-trade clause.

While the negotiations to bring Hull to Texas took only two days, starting with the opening of the free-agency period Wednesday morning and ending late Thursday, Stars owner Tom Hicks

made it clear that he's had his eye on Hull.

Hull is coming off a disappointing season in which he scored a career-low 27 goals. He had 62 goals and 101 career points against Dallas, more than he has against any other team.

The Blackhawks, who wanted Hull, instead signed center Doug Gilmour Douglas Robert Gilmour (born June 25, 1963 in Kingston, Ontario) is a retired ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League. He played for the St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, New Jersey Devils, Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres and Montreal , a 15-year veteran who spent the last season and a half with New Jersey. Gilmour received a reported three-year, $18 million deal.

The team also signed center Mark Janssens Mark Janssens (born May 19, 1968 in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) is a retired Canadian ice hockey forward.

Janssens started his National Hockey League career with the New York Rangers in 1989.

The 35-year-old Gilmour had 13 goals and 40 assists in 63 games last season with 68 penalty minutes. He has 381 goals and 795 assists with 1,028 penalty minutes in 1,125 career games with St. Louis, Calgary, Toronto and New Jersey.

Janssens, 30, scored a combined five goals with seven assists and 154 penalty minutes for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, New York Islanders The New York Islanders are a professional ice hockey team based in Uniondale, a hamlet located on Long Island in Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, New York, United States.  and Phoenix Coyotes last season.

Free-agent defenseman Jyrki Lumme, who played almost nine seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, signed a five-year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes. Lumme, a native of Finland, had nine goals and 21 assists in 74 games last season.

Toronto re-signed restricted free-agent left winger Todd Warriner, who had five goals and eight assists in 45 games for the Maple Leafs last season.

BASKETBALL: Houston Comets forward Sheryl Swoopes was released from a hospital after treatment for dehydration that had caused her to collapse a day earlier during practice.

The 27-year-old began sweating and then collapsed Thursday. She remained overnight at Methodist Hospital after doctors diagnosed the dehydration.

``She went from a standing position to down on the floor. She just dropped immediately,'' Comets spokesman Tom Savage said. ``It was a scary moment for her and us.''

Swoopes, who missed Friday night's home game against Sacramento, is doubtful for Monday and might rejoin the team in New York New York, state, United States
