BRIEFLY : CSUN GIVES LIBRARY RIGHTS TO AREA TEENS.Borrowing privileges at the California State University, Northridge, library have been extended to some 7,000 advanced placement students at 17 San Fernando Valley high schools. The one-year trial program will allow honors students in public high schools to take advantage of library materials and resources at CSUN, said Ann Perkins, head of library services. Many public school libraries lack the resources students need due to lack of funds, she said. Participating high schools are Birmingham, Canoga Park, Chatsworth, Cleveland, El Camino Real, Granada Hills, Grant, Kennedy, Monroe, North Hollywood, Polytechnic, Reseda, San Fernando, Sylmar, Taft, Van Nuys and Verdugo Hills. Similar partnerships already exist between UCLA and California State University, Los Angeles, and their surrounding high schools. To be eligible for the CSUN program, a student must attend one of the 17 participating schools, be enrolled in at least one advanced placement class and obtain permission from his parents and a school librarian. Daily News Reform panel aims to cut down charter Hoping to trim Los Angeles' immense, unwieldy charter, the city's appointed Charter Reform Commission wants to transfer half of the document's details into a separate volume or work them into the city's codes. Meeting Wednesday at the University of Southern California campus, the commission agreed to create a separate charter volume for provisions on pensions and retirement. Similarly, most details about elections and the procedures of city departments should become part of the city code, commissioners decided. - Daily News |
