BRIEFLY : COURIER, MARTIN PUT U.S. UP 2-0.

Byline: Daily News Wire Services

Suddenly, the absence of Pete Sampras Peter “Pete” Sampras (born 12 August 1971), is a former World No. 1 tennis player from the United States. During his 15-year career he won a record 14 Grand Slam men's singles titles in 52 appearances. Sampras finished as No.  and Andre Agassi Andre Kirk Agassi (born April 29 1970, in Las Vegas, Nevada) is a former World No. 1 professional tennis player from the United States who won eight Grand Slam singles tournaments and an Olympic gold medal in singles.  doesn't seem all that important.

Jim Courier James Spencer "Jim" Courier, Jr. (born August 17 1970, in Sanford, Florida) is a former world number one professional tennis player from the United States. During his ATP career, he won four Grand Slam singles titles – two at the French Open and two at the Australian Open.  and Todd Martin For the musician of the same name, see .

Todd Christopher Martin (born July 8 1970, in Hinsdale, Illinois) is a former professional tennis player from the United States.
took care of that Friday, delivering a Davis Cup jolt that could send Britain tumbling out after one round in Birmingham, England.

Courier outlasted Tim Henman in five pulsating sets, three of them going to tiebreakers, and won in 4 hours, 12 minutes. Martin followed by sweeping Greg Rusedski in less than half the time.

The United States can clinch the best-of-five series by winning the doubles today when Courier and Alex O'Brien play Henman and Rusedski.

Courier, ranked No. 54 and facing an opponent ranked No. 7, won 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (12-10), 7-5 in a match in which Henman served 25 aces and 16 double faults.

Martin, who after a barren stretch has risen to No. 8, surprisingly encountered few problems in his 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory against Rusedski.

The performances by Courier and Martin more than offset the decisions by Sampras and Agassi to skip this round of the Davis Cup.

``The way Todd played today for the first set and a half he would have beaten anyone in the world,'' Rusedski said. ``He didn't miss a ball.''
