Chick wants probe of gas price hikes

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Laura Chick called Tuesday for city officials to report on the reasons for recent fuel price increases and explain how the costs affect the city budget and what is being done to reduce those expenses.

Chick's request, which she will submit as a motion at a council meeting next week, calls for the chief legislative analyst to report on the state Energy Commission's findings on the causes of gas pump price hikes in the state during recent weeks.

It also calls upon other officials to report on efforts to buy vehicle fuel at lower prices and reduce fuel use. The city has been forced to rely on commercial gasoline providers to an increasing degree since many city-owned tanks were closed in December to comply with federal environmental rules.
