Actors Kelsey Grammer, Christopher Reeve and Pierce Brosnan are among celebrities on the American Oceans Campaign Board of Directors. The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association and Surfrider Foundation are joining in the campaign.

Representatives of the groups called for enactment of a water-quality bill that was recently passed by the Assembly and is pending in the state Senate. A similar federal bill is about to be reintroduced, officials said. The measures would require government authorities to test water along state and national coastlines, and issue warnings to swimmers when pollution levels rise to unsafe conditions.
