At county golf courses, the price for weekend play will rise by $2, while weekday play will cost $1 more. Panel vote would cap Block's pay

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a proposal to limit the salary of incumbent Sheriff Sherman Block if he's re-elected in November.

Taking advantage of a provision that allows them to cap the salary of elected county officials, the Supervisors decided that Block would not get annual pay increases that would raise his $232,000 salary further. He is paid more than triple the $62,952 he made when he first became sheriff in 1982.

Police seeking man in failed kidnapping

Police were searching for a man Tuesday who attempted to kidnap a 9-year-old girl he'd thrown in the trunk of his car near Dodger Stadium     [ .

The man was driving a faded red car thought to be a Honda and was seen near two other elementary schools earlier in the day, said Officer Jason Lee, an LAPD spokesman.

The suspect is a Latino about 25 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds, Lee said. He was wearing light blue jeans, black-and-white Nike tennis shoes, a black-and-white Nike cap, and a black Nike turtleneck. He has a thin build and a mustache.

The man was spotted earlier in the day at Allesandro and Doris Place elementary schools in the Elysian Valley, Lee said.

Council OKs NorthHills townhouses

Despite the protests of neighboring residents, the Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  on Tuesday approved a 23-townhouse development in North Hills proposed by former Airport Commission President Ted Stein.

The 14-0 vote came after Councilman Hal Bernson, in whose district the project is located, said the development is the best use for the property at 16536 Nordhoff St.

The project was scaled back from its original proposal of 30 structures, and calls for individual two-story houses of three and four bedrooms to be built on 4,000-square-foot lots. Stein has said the houses will be provided with extra sound-proofing.
