The agreement is part of a $112 facelift for the airport, the most extensive to be undertaken at LAX since the 1984 Olympics.

Plan to drop index for deputies panned

Sheriff Lee Baca's plan to eliminate certain factors from an index that measures deputies' use of force was criticized Tuesday by the author of a semi-annual report on the sheriff's department.

Merrick Bobb said Baca is considering taking ``critical pieces'' out of the Personal Performance Index, which is used to identify deputies who may require more training in how to handle certain situations.

A state lawmaker said Tuesday that the state Public Utilities Commission should retract a plan to introduce a 747 area code when the 818 area runs out of telephone numbers.

Assemblyman Wally Knox, D-Los Angeles, in a letter to the commission, said a public furor has resulted from the recent announcement even though a split is at least years away. Knox authored legislation for conservation of phone numbers and other steps to delay an area code overlay or split.
