BRIEFLY : CONDITION IMPROVES FOR SHOOTING VICTIM.


A newspaper deliveryman was upgraded to stable condition Saturday, one day after he was shot while doing his rounds in Sun Valley, a nursing supervisor said.

Daniel Castillo Veronica, 29, of Pacoima was beaten and then shot in the chest by four men apparently trying to steal his truck at the corner of Laurel Canyon Laurel Canyon can refer to several things:

Veronica underwent surgery at Pacifica Hospital of the Valley on Friday morning and was upgraded from serious to stable condition Saturday.

 reports arrests up for drunk driving

 on Saturday reported an increase in drunk driving arrests over the Memorial Day weekend a year ago.

The CHP arrested 98 motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County, compared to 74 arrests made last year.

Statewide, 418 people were arrested - in comparison to 381 arrests last year during the same time period.

No deaths on Los Angeles County highways were reported during the first 12 hours of this year's three-day Memorial Day weekend.

The initial reporting period began Friday at 6 p.m. and concluded at 6 a.m. Saturday, said CHP Officer Rhett Price. Last year during the same 12-hour period, the CHP also reported no deaths on Los Angeles County highways.

Statewide, four people were killed in traffic-related collisions, down from last year's total of six, Price said.

Twin Towers inmate killed during beating

An inmate at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility The Twin Towers Correctional Facility, also referred to in the media as Twin Towers Jail, is a complex erected in Los Angeles, California to house inmates of the Los Angeles County Courts. It is the world’s largest jail.  was apparently beaten to death Saturday, a sheriff's deputy said.

The victim, whose name was not released pending notification of his family, was found at 12:30 a.m. inside the facility, said Deputy Steve Sciacca. He wasn't moving and was later pronounced dead by the jail's medical personnel.

Homicide detectives will interview inmates to find witnesses, Sciacca said.

Deputies discover missing man's car

LANCASTER - Investigators found the abandoned sport-utility vehicle belonging to a 28-year-old Lancaster man last seen Wednesday withdrawing money from a bank, a sheriff's lieutenant said.

Lorne Frederickson, a student at Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties. , dropped his son off at school Wednesday and then went to the bank, said Lt. Steve Fredericks of the Lancaster sheriff's station.

His pregnant wife, Helen, reported him missing Thursday.

Investigators found his 1995 Isuzu Rodeo on Friday night on Yucca Street near Lancaster Boulevard, Fredericks said.

``There was no evidence of foul play, and the vehicle is being examined for possible clues,'' he said.

Frederickson is the son-in-law of a couple who won $22 million in the state lottery A game of chance operated by a state government.

Wayward pet emu gets wings clipped

SANTA CLARITA - A pet emu missing for three days was captured Saturday after it was reported roaming through traffic on Sierra Highway, a sheriff's deputy said.

The emu's owner called the sheriff's station later Saturday and said the bird had been missing for three days. The emu remained in the care of animal control, Ray said.
