Computer hacker Kevin Mitnick Kevin David Mitnick (born October 6, 1963) is a controversial computer cracker and convicted criminal in the United States.

Federal judge OKs Edison settlement

A federal judge approved an $11.25 million class-action settlement Monday in a ``glass ceiling'' suit filed by nine African-American Edison employees, who claimed they were denied training and advancement.

About 2,300 African-Americans employed by Edison between 1989 and the present may be eligible to file a claim against the company under terms of the settlement U.S. District Judge James Ideman approved. The claims will be used to determine distribution of the monetary award.

The suit was filed in 1994 on behalf of all African-American employees in the company. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission also joined the plaintiffs.

Prosecutor alleges Sobek sex-torture

As Linda Sobek's parents listened, a prosecutor told a jury in Torrance on Monday that free-lance photographer Charles Rathbun sexually tortured the model, then killed her last Nov. 16 to keep her from telling police.

New lane opens on Reagan Freeway

NORTHRIDGE - West Valley commuters should have an easier drive into work starting today, as an additional lane opens to traffic on a two-mile stretch of the eastbound Ronald Reagan Freeway between DeSoto and Tampa avenues.

The lane is opening ahead of schedule, Caltrans officials said, adding that completion of the entire $22 million widening project is expected by the end of October.

Sherman Oaks man appointed to panel

Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Feuer announced Monday that he has named Sherman Oaks resident Joseph Mandel to the council's advisory commission on charter reform.

Mandel, who is the 10th person appointed to the 21-person commission, is vice chancellor for legal affairs at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

Real estate broker focuses on race

Sherman Oaks real estate broker Jeff Brain said Monday he is resigning as chairman of the Ventura Boulevard Specific Plan Review Board to focus on a run for the 5th Council District seat against Councilman Mike Feuer.

Brain has represented Feuer on the board, which oversaw the creation of a plan to regulate development, parking and street improvements along a 17-mile stretch of Ventura Boulevard from Studio City to Woodland Hills.

Teacher convicted of molesting kids

A former Sunland Elementary School teacher was convicted in San Fernando Superior Court on Monday of a dozen counts of lewd acts with a child for molesting several of his third-grade students.

John Sampson Njoroge, 30, a third-grade teacher for several years at the school, was found guilty of 12 of the 14 counts against him. He faces 30 years in state prison, said Deputy District Attorney Cynthia Meagher-Walker.

Defense attorney nabbed for drugs

A defense attorney was arrested Monday after he appeared at Van Nuys Superior Court to represent a client and appeared to be under the influence of narcotics narcotics n. 1) techinically, drugs which dull the senses. 2) a popular generic term for drugs which cannot be legally possessed, sold, or transported except for medicinal uses for which a physician or dentist's prescription is required. , officials said.
